Injured patients should file an adverse event report with the FDA. Absent reports from the public, the FDA will not realize the extent of the dangers of Sargent Paste. Click here to file report. Also ask your doctor to file a report on your behalf. Since reports are voluntary over 90% of adverse events go unreported.

AMERICAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION & SARGENTI PASTE

BACK

Below is information and emails from the American Dental Associations's (ADA) about their position on Sargenti Paste. Unless otherwise stated, the emails listed were sent to members of the Sargenti Opposition Society.

This link is to excerpts from the 2006 ADA/PDR Guide to Dental Therapeutics where Sargenti Paste and, in general, unapproved drugs are discussed along with a dentist's "duty of disclosure" when these materials are used.

Sargenti-using dentists are not following the written guidelines established by the ADA.

Email from Dr. Mark J Feldman, DMD,
ADA President

Thank you for your recent e-mail to me.  The Sargenti paste substance which, as you point out, is known by a number of other names as well, was never submitted for evaluation under the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance program, and thus has never carried the ADA's Seal of Acceptance.  In addition, the ADA is in the process of reviewing its web site and will keep your comment regarding the posting of dental organizations in mind.

The ADA doesn't have a position statement on Sargenti paste but the AAE (American Association of Endodontists) suggests not to use the product. The ADA had a resolution back in 1991 stating that the Council on Dental Therapeutics (now part of Council Scientific Affairs) "cannot recommend the use of these products at this time."   The ADA cannot recommend it and the FDA has not approved it.
1991 ADA Website American Dental Society, Index of Official Actions, 1954-2005, Paraformaldehyde-Containing Root Canal Filling Safety Study, Requested 1991:586

The ADA has recently issued a public statement and taken action regarding the possibility of lead in dental materials, such as crowns, imported from China. This action was taken after the news media broke the story of lead in imported toys. The ADA has even written to the FDA (Letter 1, Letter 2, FDA response) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Letter1, Letter 2) about their concern and plans to further investigate and even state "The ADA and its member dentists always place patients’ health and safety above all other concerns". Why then, is the ADA not concerned about patient safety when dentists are using Sargenti Paste that contains lead and the highly toxic formaldehyde? They know that this issue exists and has for decades and yet, they continue to do nothing.
